Moraine Valley Community College is hosting the photo documentary exhibit "American Muslim/Muslim American" by photojournalist Robert Gerhardt in the Fine and Performing Arts Center's Atrium, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills. The exhibit will run until February 24.

"American Muslim/Muslim American" is a series of photographs documenting the candid and alternative real life scenarios of American Muslim communities in the United States. The American Muslim community struggles to deal with the fear and hate that grew against it as a result of the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and it continues to face serious and discriminant cultural misunderstandings and acts of violence.

"Large scale tragedies have occurred worldwide, but when people suddenly perceive their neighbors as something apart due to an unjustified association, serious and deep divides occur. It is our hope this photo exhibit stimulates dialogue that attempts to erase the boundaries that engender a sense of ‘them' and begins to foster a sense of ‘us,'" said Karen Danielson, director of the Muslim American Society Outreach Chicago, which is sponsoring the exhibit.

Gerhardt holds a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology/Sociology and Art History from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The exhibit is free and available for viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as during most performances in the Fine and Performing Arts Center. For more information, visit or call Jamie Callahan at (708) 608-4231.
