According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the following five pathogens contributed to the most domestically acquired foodborne illnesses in 2011:

2. Salmonella: 1,027,561 estimated illnesses
3. Clostridium perfringens: 965,958 estimated illnesses
4. Campylobacter spp: 845,024 estimated illnesses
