Free diabetes awareness event reaches out to Latinos

Conferencia: Diabetes de los Pies a la Cabeza (Educational Conference: Diabetes from Head to Toe) will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Cicero Community Center, Cicero.

The event is designed to educate the local Latino community. The event is free to the public.

Conferencia is a part of the American Diabetes Association’s Latino outreach program, Por tu Familia. The one-day event features several workshops and demonstrations in English and Spanish, and exhibitors that offer services and resources for the uninsured and under-insured.

The day’s activities include:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Health Fair opens (screenings, testing and “Ask the Expert” area)

10:15 to 10:45 a.m.: Diabetes Basics: Myths vs. Facts

10:50 to 11:20 a.m.: Diabetes complications, heart, nerves and eyes

11:25 to 11:45 a.m.: Everybody move for your health

11:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.: Diabetes and your state of mind

12:30 to 1:15 p.m.: Health and Flavor in the Latino Kitchen cooking demonstration

Free services will include:

Blood pressure screenings

Diabetes risk assessments

Cholesterol test

Foot, dental and vision screenings

Ask the Health expert booth

Community and governmental resources

Screening participants include:
