Silver Cross in Joliet hosts free diabetes educational event

The Silver Cross Diabetes Center will host a Fall Festival from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 13, in the Conference Center at Silver Cross Hospital, 1200 Maple Road, Joliet.

The event is free. Parking and complimentary shuttle service are available at the hospital’s Keck Emergency Pavilion entrance.

Participants can be screened for high blood pressure and cholesterol at the event. No fasting is required.

At 8:30 a.m., Dr. Jose Penaherrera, internal medicine physician and medical director of the Silver Cross Diabetes Center, will present “What’s New in Diabetes Management.” At 9:30 a.m., Tina Powers, registered dietitian and certified nurse educator, will present “Take Control — Living Healthy with Diabetes.”

From 9 to 11:30 a.m., experts will discuss the following two topics: “Watch Your Step,” which will address foot health, and “Enhance Your View,” a discussion on eye health and current treatments.

From 10:30 a.m. to noon, Silver Cross chefs will hold healthy sugar-free cooking demonstrations. Raffle prizes and refreshments will be available. Diabetic participants also will receive a gift bag with samples of diabetes-related products.
