With strong horizontal lines and natural stone accents, the elegant condominium buildings at Prairie Park in Wheeling display the distinctive characteristics of Prairie style, the home-grown architecture of Illinois.

To complement this natural, organic design, Smith Family Construction, the builders of Prairie Park, have created a beautiful landscape of native grasses and wildflowers, many of which have bloomed on Midwestern prairies for centuries.

The purple iris, the bright gold coreopsis and the silvery grasses create a spectacular landscape that begins at the waterfall entry and is carried throughout the community. But the benefits of this type of landscaping go far beyond its beauty.

“Because these plants are native to our area, they are acclimated to our hot summers and cold winters,” said Vivian Smith, an avid gardener who personally designed the landscaping. “That means they need less watering and chemical fertilizer than plants that come from a different climate.”

Another advantage of native plants is that they offer year round beauty, with different varieties blooming from early spring through frost. Even in winter, the dried grasses combine with the white birch and evergreens to provide visual interest.

And there’s more, said Smith.

“Birds and butterflies love this type of landscape, and our residents love seeing them as they walk around our 18 acres of grounds.”

This thoughtful attention to detail is carried out in every aspect of Prairie Park. The welcoming clubhouse features an indoor pool and exercise room, a party room with kitchen and an expansive terrace with views of the lake, all finished with exquisite Prairie-style detailing.

The two- and three-bedroom condominiums offer bright, open living areas and large expanses of windows in buildings that are carefully designed to maximize natural light. Each home includes a private terrace with gas line for outdoor grilling. There are 12 plans to choose from, ranging in size from 1,289 to 2,254 square feet, and priced from $229,900.

Current incentives on select homes include a second indoor parking space, a $15,000 credit toward upgrades and a year of free association fees.
