After 57 years in business, Blink Appliance & Kitchens in Lynwood continues to thrive thanks to adherence to founder Duane Blink’s philosophy of customer service, which amounts to giving total attention to customers’ needs and offering quality appliances and other inventory.

Duane’s sons, Doug and Brian, who handle the day-to-day operations of the longtime business, carry on the company’s tradition by offering small-store expertise while staying competitive in price.

“People assume that big box stores will be cheaper and they’ll have to sacrifice knowledgeable service to get a better price,” Doug said. “We have both good pricing and better service - before during and after the sale. People who sell products at box stores have never installed or worked on them. I’ve done that for 30 years,” said Doug, who once came in second in a national product knowledge competition.

Doug says the Blink staff educates itself on its line of products — including such brands as Viking, Sub-Zero and Wolf, top quality brands — by attending product trainings, then pass this knowledge on to customers. They also help people who have service or installation questions.

“Anyone can sell you something cheap. Trying to find something that best fits a customer’s needs at a great price is a better value,” he said.

In addition to Doug and Brian, other Blink family members do their part to make the business such a success, including Doug’s daughter, Allison, 24 — who offers the knowledge she gained earning a math degree from Purdue and growing up around the shop — and two sons, Zachary and Nick, who work part time doing deliveries.

“People appreciate family businesses,” Doug said. “A lot of people come in and say they think they’ve really been educated by myself or my daughter. They’re amazed at how much she knows about the products. She’s been around them her whole life.

“We try to help our customers pick the best products for their needs. We’re willing to help them at any point. I have customers who call 30 years later with a problem and we help them over the phone sometimes. People appreciate you helping them to fix it. We’re willing to help people and treat customers the way we’d want to be treated.”
