Illinois Women Veterans Fair to be held Saturday

The first Illinois Women Veterans Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Student Services Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. The fair begins at noon.

Co-sponsored by the College and the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, the free event offers resource booths, presentations and a special film screening. Shelly Mencacci, coordinator of Veteran Services at College of DuPage, said the fair will address topics specifically for female veterans.

"We will promote resiliency, grace and transition throughout the event," she said. "We want these women to learn how to take the leadership skills they mastered in the military, refine them and use them in their civilian lives."

The schedule of events is as follows:
* Noon to 4 p.m.: Resource booths open
* 1:30 p.m.: Opening ceremony featuring keynote by IDVA Director Erica Borggren
* 2:30 to 4 p.m.: Workshops on PTSD/MST, Resiliency and Transitioning
* 4:15 p.m.: Screening in the Veterans Lounge of "The Invisible War," a documentary by Oscar- and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick about the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military

"We are proud of how these women have served us, and now it's time for us to serve them," Mencacci said. "By co-sponsoring this fair and providing educational resources, College of DuPage is committed to helping women veterans make a successful transition to civilian life."
