Eric Varney named MIVA Defensive Player of the Week

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis junior libero Eric Varney (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park/Moorpark CC) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Week. Varney helped guide the sixth-ranked Lewis men's volleyball team to wins over St. Francis (Pa.) and George Mason last week by averaging 2.86 digs per set and posting a .973 (36-of-37) reception percentage.

In Lewis' 3-0 sweep of St. Francis on Friday, Varney racked up a match-best 11 digs and helped limit the Red Flash offense to a -.014 (21-22-71) attack percentage for the night. He also finished the contest with a .900 (9-for-10) reception percentage.
In the Flyers' four-set win over George Mason the next day, Varney collected a match-best nine digs and posted a perfect 1.000 reception percentage, passing all 27 serves he faced. With his efforts for the week, Varney raised his digs-per-set average to 1.85 for the year.
"Eric was awesome all of last week in practice and put it to work this weekend in helping us win," Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. "It is awesome that Eric and the team are recognized for some solid serve receive numbers and a great defensive effort."
Lewis' wins over St. Francis (Pa.) and George Mason helped the Flyers move up a spot to No. 6 in the latest AVCA Poll.
The Flyers (6-2) open MIVA play on Friday at IPFW with a 7 p.m. ET start. Lewis is at Ball State on Sunday.
