Women's track and field places third at IWU's Keck Invitational

Bloomington, Ill. - Lewis University freshman Shakea Mercer (Suitland, Md./Suitland) turned in a pair of victories to lift the Flyer women's track and field team to a third-place finish at the Bob Keck Invitational, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan, at the Shirk Center on Saturday (Feb. 4) evening.

Mercer won the 55-meter dash (7.23) and edged teammate Samantha Stewart (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) for the victory in the 55-meter hurdles (8.79). Stewart was second with a time of 8.87.

Flyer freshman Kayla Patterson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) captured the 3,000-meter run (10:37.79), while senior Karissa Hoffman (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) was victorious in the triple jump (11.27m).

Senior Samantha Linck (Kohler, Wis./Kohler) wrapped up the top-two finishers for the Flyers with a runner-up mark in the high jump (1.63m).

"I thought we had some great performances today," Lewis head women's track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. "It was a good meet to build towards the conference championships."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Feb. 10), as the Flyers head to Allendale, Mich., to participate in the GVSU Big Meet.
