Women's track and field wins Chicagoland championships

Naperville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's track and field team, led by eight victories - including a pair of NCAA Provisional marks by senior Samantha Linck (Kohler, Wis./Kohler) and freshman Shakea Mercer (Suitland, Md./Suitland) - took home the Chicagoland Championship, hosted by North Central College, at the Al B. Carius Track on Friday (Feb. 10) night.

Mercer, who won three events, won the 60-meter dash with a NCAA provisional mark of 7.73. She also captured the 200-meter dash title, crossing the finish line in 25.6. She also ran a leg of the winning 4x200 relay (1:42.93), along with Kayla King (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley), Kamille Ferguson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Amber Wentzloff (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling). Linck took home the high jump event with a NCAA provisional leap of 1.72 meters.

Sophomore Megan Marchildon (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated) won the 60-meter hurdles (9.02) title, while senior Julie Jarrett (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) won the 800-meter run (2:20.24).

Flyer senior Karissa Hoffman (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) won the long jump title with a leap of 5.46 meters, edging the mark of 5.45 meters set by teammate Samantha McGaha (Greenwood, Ind./Perry Meridian). Hoffman was also victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 11.47 meters.

Lewis finished with 162 points, while host North Central was second overall with 111 points.

"We had a complete all-around performance tonight," Lewis head women's track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. "This is a pre-conference tune-up and I am very happy with the results. Tonight we proved that we are the best team in the Chicagoland area."

King finished behind Mercer in both her wins, with runner-up finishes in both the 60-meter dash (7.86) and 200-meter dash (26.61), while Ferguson rounded out the second-place finishers for the Flyers, with a runner-up mark in the 400-meter dash (58.9).

Lewis returns to action next week, as they participate in both the GVSU Tune-Up, hosted by Grand Valley State, and Cardinal Classic, hosted by North Central College, on Friday (Feb. 17) evening.
