Romeoville, Ill. - The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Wednesday (Feb. 15) that Lewis University freshman Shakea Mercer (Suitland, Md./Suitland) and senior Samantha Linck (Kohler, Wis./Kohler) have been selected as the GLVC Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 12th.

Mercer won three events and added a NCAA provisional mark to help the Flyers to the Chicagoland Championships title, hosted by North Central College on Friday (Feb. 10) night. The Maryland native won the 60-meter dash with a NCAA Provisional mark of 7.73 and added a victory in the 200-meter dash (25.6). She also ran a leg of the winning 4x200 relay (1:42.93).

Mercer currently holds the fastest 55-meter dash (7.22) and second-fastest 200-meter dash (26.27) in the GLVC.

"Shakea had a breakout weekend," Lewis head women's track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. "She's peaking in time for the GLVC Championships and she should have a great finish to the indoor season."

Linck won the high jump event at the Chicagoland Championships with a NCAA provisional leap of 1.72 meters. Linck owns the best high jump in the GLVC and currently sits in a tie for 12th in the country.

"Sami has been having a tough time at meets, but got out of her slump in a big way," Schwarting said. "She's the best high jumper in the conference and now she has to go and prove it in two weeks at the conference championships."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Feb. 17), as the Flyers will participate in both the GVSU Tune-Up, hosted by Grand Valley State, and the Cardinal Classic, hosted by North Central College.
