Women's track and field takes home Cardinal Classic title

Naperville, Ill. - Lewis University seniors Samantha Linck (Kohler, Wis./Kohler) and Karissa Hoffman (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each earned victories and NCAA provisional marks to lift the Flyers to the Cardinal Classic title, hosted by North Central College, at the Al B. Carius Track on Friday (Feb. 17) night.

Linck won the high jump with a leap of 5'8", while Hoffman turned in a mark of 37'9 1/4" in the triple jump.

Lewis finished the day with 171.5 points, followed by the host Cardinals (149 points).

"That's two wins in a row for us," Lewis head women's track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. "I'm really happy with the way we performed today. We definitely improved ourselves in the conference rankings and we're set up pretty nice for the conference championships next week."

Lewis sophomore Megan Marchildon (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated) took home the 60-meter hurdles title, crossing the finish line in 8.96 and added a runner-up finish in the long jump (17'2"). Teammate Samantha McGaha (Greenwood, Ind./Perry Meridian) won the long jump title with a leap of 17'6 3/4".

Flyer junior Kamille Ferguson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) edged teammate Kayla King (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) in the 60-meter dash with a first-place time of 7.83. King crossed the finish line in 7.92.

Lewis senior Julie Jarrett (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) finished second in the 1-mile run (5:15.04), while freshman Amy Polhemus (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) earned a runner-up mark in the 400-meter dash (1:00.01). Flyer sophomore Amber Wentzloff (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) was second in the 200-meter run (26.38).

The Flyers also received second-place finishes in the weight throw (46'8") by junior Emily Keene (Hebron, Ind./Boone Grove) and in the shot put (38'2 3/4") by freshman Roslyn Summerville (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda). Lewis also received a second-place finish from their 4x400 relay (4:01.01).

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Feb. 24), as they head to Somers, Wis., to participate in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
