At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, LAF kicked off its campaign for #GivingTuesday, a national day of action to celebrate charitable giving and giving back.

LAF planned a collective action for #GivingTuesday and asked its staff, board of directors and Young Professionals Board to post pictures of themselves holding signs that read: "I support LAF because..." on their Facebook and Twitter accounts and a link to a special donation page. The legal-aid organization set a goal of $2,013 for its inaugural year of participating in the national day of action. The group even secured a match from a member of its Young Professionals Board if the goal was met. By 11:30 a.m., the total was up to $11,410. By the end of the day, LAF had raised $18,800 in donations thanks to a social media campaign that went viral.

"The response to this effort - both from longtime supporters of LAF and from within the networks of the people participating in this campaign - has been staggering," said Diana White, LAF's executive director. "We're so thankful to the people who support our work not just on #GivingTuesday but also every day of the year. Their generosity means we can provide real, lasting solutions to the problems people living in poverty encounter in their everyday lives."

Each year, LAF impacts 40,000 lives by providing free legal help to resolve non-criminal issues such as domestic violence, consumer fraud and unfair evictions. LAF makes equal justice a reality and gets people back on track. The organization relies on private donations to fulfill its mission.
