The Gurnee Days Corporation, a not-for-profit organization of volunteers, has been planning and orchestrating the annual Gurnee Days celebration for 41 years. The upcoming Gurnee Days will be on Thursday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 11. This year’s theme is “Ahoy Matey – It’s Gurnee Days.” View the schedule at www.gurneedays.com.

The celebration begins with a Thursday evening Testimonial Dinner honoring an individual or couple who has made a significant contribution to the community. The 2013 Honoree is Lisa Sheppard. Friday’s activities include a bicycle rodeo, story time extravaganza, dog Frisbee championship, Gurnee Idol, movie in the park and a Friday night beer garden and live bands and entertainment.

For the tenth year at Gurnee Days, amusement rides provide an opportunity for additional family fun at the event. Since part of the ride ticket receipts will be given back to the Gurnee Days Corporation, these rides help fund the festival. Entertaining rides and games for all ages will be on hand Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday kicks off with a golf tournament and a 10K and two-mile fun run and walk. Viking Park hosts exhibitors, food, games and stage events. This year’s new event is the Great Gurnee Adventure, a scavenger hunt throughout the village. A baby contest for Gurnee children younger than one is held in the morning along with open houses at the Gurnee Police, Public Works and Fire Departments. Viking School will also display a student art show. Saturday evening concludes with a rib fest, live bands and a fireworks extravaganza at the park.

Sunday events include a pancake breakfast and a parade along Old Grand Avenue. Viking Park will be overflowing with people enjoying the talent and car shows.

Cash and in-kind contributions from area businesses, individuals and civic organizations fund Gurnee Days. Without their generous support, Gurnee Days would not be possible.

This year’s Gurnee Days president, Donna Dallas, is looking forward to the culmination of 12 months of dedicated volunteerism by the Gurnee Days Corporation to provide the best in family fun and entertainment with a hometown feel.
