Something borrowed, something bloom

Something old? Check. Something new? Check. Something borrowed? Check. Something bloom? Umm. Couples needing assistance with floral arrangements for their big day can get a helping hand from the designers at Sunset Foods Floral Design.

Sunset’s floral designer, Joanne Willing, said floral trends for 2014 find inspiration in the small screen and the silver screen.

“We do see a trend toward traditional, formal weddings that draw inspiration from the movie The Great Gatsby and the BBC series Downton Abbey,” Willing said.

Although traditional arrangements may adhere to some rules, Willing noted that the choices in blooms and colors are almost limitless.

The rustic back-to-nature look is also popular this year.

“We’re seeing strong interest in natural elements like birch bark, twigs, leaves and stones,” Willing said.

After choosing a floral style, whether traditional or rustic, the couple also must decide on how they will decorate for the wedding — particularly when it comes to the centerpiece.

“The height of centerpieces is really driven more by budget than trends,” Willing said. “Tall, dramatic centers, of course, cost more than compact, on-the-table styles.”

Sunset has a vast and affordable selection of flowers to help couples design centerpieces that will give them fond memories without breaking the bank. The selection includes bamboo and driftwood for a more outdoorsy style; orchids and Bird of Paradise for a tropical look; and rose biedermeiers for the traditionalist.

Besides decorating with flowers, brides are also incorporating fresh flowers into their hairstyles.

“Flowers in the hair are big right now,” Willing said.

This wonderfully romantic touch can be suited to a wide range of personal styles.

The color of flowers is just as important as the type of flowers used, Willing said.

“Colors are trending toward a softer, more muted feel, such as pinks, blush, peach, and the orchid palette,” the designer said.

Willing said today’s brides consider more than style when determining what flowers they will purchase.

“Many brides do like the idea of being environmentally conscious and will look to using locally grown flowers. For a more casual wedding celebration brides can choose blooming plants that may be a gift favor or planted as a special memento for the newly wedded couple.
