Staying agile and mobile is a constant concern of those who are aging. Studies have shown that physical activity can help discourage declines in health, and those that exercise are much more likely to keep their mobility and independence.

Regular exercise can help control blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol as well as lower your risk for heart attack and stroke. Not only can exercise have a positive benefit on your health, it can help you sleep better, manage your stress, give you extra endurance to do the things that you love, and help you meet new people.

Some great exercises for seniors include walking, swimming, cycling, low-impact aerobics and yoga. Along with exercise it is important to work on your balance and flexibility as you age. Stretching and keeping muscles limber helps increase your range of motion, increase your circulation, and aids in improving your balance. Regular exercise can not only help you feel better, it can also improve your quality of life.

Some things to keep in mind when starting an exercise program:

1. Get medical clearance from your doctor, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.

2. Start off easy, and slowly build yourself up to longer and more challenging exercise.

3. Commit to an exercise schedule so it becomes a regular routine in your life.

4. Make short term goals.

5. Recognize problems – exercise should never be painful. Stop exercising immediately and call your doctor if you have any shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness.
